Biography

Laszlo De Somogy is a Belgian-Hungarian artist born in Vác (Hungary), on the other side of the Wall and under a communist regime. At a very young age, art seemed to be the perfect get-away to flee his everyday life as he recalls it himself. Hence, he followed the artistic path and studied art pedagogy in Hungary, followed by a complementary year of specialization at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest under the supervision of Gábor Nagy. His academic career continued in Austria, where he collaborated with the Hundertwasser Meisterschule during one year.

As an artist, Laszlo De Somogy partnered with various architects internationally and participated to several projects of restoration and decoration in, e.g. Austria, Spain, the U.K. and Belgium, such as the train station of Antwerp or the Stadsfeestzaal (Antwerp).

Today, De Somogy can be described as a multifaceted artist as his curiosity lead him to test and experiment with different techniques and materials (bronze, plastic, aluminum, golden leaves, industrial materials, paintings, etc). Thus, he expanded his artistic skills over the years to include painting, sculpture and digital art among others. Laszlo De Somogy now masters mixed media paintings by combining both the latest digital technologies with more classical forms of art (oil paintings, acrylic, collage,…).

Laszlo De Somogy’s philosophy is simple and follows Marcel Duchamp’s reasoning:

“I think that the artist who makes this piece of art does not know what he does. I mean that he knows what he does physically (…) but is not capable of estimating the esthetic result. The artist creates something very profound without knowing it. He likes believing that he is perfectly conscious of what he does, of why he does it, of how he does it, and of the intrinsic value of his piece of art. I sincerely believe that the artwork is created by both the public and the artist.”
